The Finnish Climate Corps: Designing Ecological Care Work as Dignified Labour for an AI-transformed Economy

The conversation about AI’s effects on knowledge work has focused on exposure and economic impact, leaving the experiential dimension underexamined. At the same time, Helsinki’s binding ecological mandates have outpaced the workforce planning needed to deliver them. This thesis responds to both through a single design.Drawing on systems-oriented service design, futures design, and sustainable transitions design, the thesis uses Research through Design to develop the Finnish Climate Corps: a speculative employment programme that would place AI-displaced knowledge workers into attentive ecological care work in Helsinki. Eight methods inform the design, including netnographic analysis of 202 firsthand accounts, knowledge worker and expert interviews, surveys, a policy-to-labour crosswalk of 342 mandated ecological work instances, and precedent analysis of four conservation corps programmes. Five theoretical lenses (Jahoda, Honneth, Ibarra, Kaplan, and Puig de la Bellacasa) run across the research.AI displacement is predominantly quiet: invisible to employment statistics, and often unnameable by those living through it. Within the netnographic dataset, 15% of accounts describe job loss; the remaining 85% describe forms of professional erosion that unfold while people remain employed, freelancing, or job-seeking. The thesis maps nine co-occurring conditions of quiet displacement and identifies the internal architecture of the dominant condition, hollowing out: its core pressures, contextual amplifiers, and response patterns. The Climate Corps responds with a cohort-based programme that restores Jahoda’s latent functions, builds conditions for social recognition, and supports identity transition through attentive ecological care work. The thesis treats AI displacement as a question of dignity, not income alone. The Finnish Climate Corps shows what designing from that view can look like.
