Design led companies outperform peers, yet many still struggle to embed human centred design. This thesis studies Software Team X at a large mobile-network firm with limited user contact and evidence of an unstructured process to ensure desirability. This Research through Design study how can this team identify its current design-maturity level and improve it?A survey, interviews, ethnography, document review, co-creation workshops and a focus group were used to assess the design maturity. Team X falls between Levels 2 and 3 on the Danish Design Ladder and at Stage 3 on the Nielsen Norman model, but the design process is at Stage 2, the most critical point. With one designer per 89 engineers, design is undervalued.Building on these insights, the thesis describes a speculative future scenario in which designers shift from an unstructured set-up to a hybrid design model. It also proposes a path to achieve this future through a designers' guild and a roadmap for the guild.
